births of the children born in Chins of Anglo-

British subjects, a difficulty arises from the
provision in section 1 (1) (h) (v) of the
British natiɔmlity and Status of Aliens Act,
as amended in 1922, ander which the child born
abroad of a British subject acquires British
nationality on his birth being registered at a
British Consulate within one year. The effect
of this provisions would appear to be to give
a British subject a statutory right to have his
ohild's birth registered at a British Consulate
if he wishes to do so, and if so it would not
be possible to deprive him of that right.
The
point is not so important in China at the
present time, because at present the children of
British subjecte born in China are British
subjects, without their births being registered,
under Section 1 (1) (b) (ii) of the Act; but it
will become material on the termination of our
extra-territorial jurisdiction in China,
because then registration will be necessary in
order to preserve the British nationality of
